Managing director

University College Roosevelt (UCR) is a residential university college in Middelburg, Zeeland. It offers its students an English-taught, three-year Utrecht University undergraduate program in the liberal arts and sciences, which leads up to diplomas as Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Sciences. UCR educates for academic excellence, personal growth, and global citizenship. Well over 80% of UCR’s graduating students complete their studies in the nominal three years. About half of UCR alumni continue their studies at Dutch universities, about half do so at universities abroad.
University College Roosevelt is an independent employer of approx. 70 employees. The academic faculty divides up over four departments: Arts and Humanities, Social Science, Science and Engineering. Administrative staff run our student office, communications and recruitment, human resources and finance, and facilities and ICT.
University College Roosevelt has a vacancy for a managing director, who will be a member of the executive board (composed of academic dean (chair) and managing director). As managing director you will also be member of the daily management team of University College Roosevelt together with the dean, the director of education, and the secretary to the board. Together with the dean, the managing director bears final executive responsibility for the academic, organizational and financial health of the college. The executive board of the foundation UCR is also the employer of everyone working at UCR. The board itself is employed by the Board of Trustees and reports both to the board of Utrecht University and to UCR’s own Board of Trustees.
From the daily management team, the managing director leads a team of approximately 20 people (including several heads of administrative departments) that run the student office, communications and marketing, facilities and IT, HR & finance. The managing director is jointly responsible for the preparation and implementation of UCR's strategic policy. You ensure good communication and organize sufficient support with regard to business operations among employees and students and you create space for innovations in the broadest sense. Given the limited size of the team, as a managing director you have a hands-on mentality and you assist where and when necessary. You work on strengthening and expanding the relationship with University College Roosevelt’s strategic partners through active participation in all networks that UCR participates in.
Tasks and responsibilties
The managing director bears responsibility for all processes that support the primary academic goals, including the responsibility for the financial management of the college. The managing director bears responsibility for the preparation for approval of yearly financial reports and hence the financial solidity and continuation of the college. As member of the executive board of UCR, the managing director represents UCR in relations with crucial external stakeholders.

UCR is in a dynamic process of change with regard to its internal organization and its working culture. The successful candidate should have ample experience with aligning successfully the primary academic goals of the organization with the administrative and support processes that are necessary to achieve them. The successful candidate is able to cooperate with colleagues both from the administrative and academic departments, and has proven leadership capacities by which colleagues will be led to support the goals of the organization. Although the vacancy is for one of the most senior roles in the organization, an attitude of serving leadership for the community is a requirement for helping realize the culture of connectedness that University College Roosevelt aims to achieve for its employees and students.
As managing director you have at least the following knowledge and experience:
  • Completed academic training;
  • Managerial experience, preferably gained within a university or other knowledge organizations;
  • Extensive experience in the organization and management of support processes and operational management in a professional organization;
  • Demonstrable advanced knowledge of strategic processes and finances, you are able to translate ambitions into scenarios with associated risk analyzes and help shape the realization of these ambitions;
  • Proven experience in complex processes of change management;
  • Coaching and integrating leadership style by which you know how to bring people together behind shared goals;
  • Administrative and organizational sensitivity;
  • Excellent command of the English language.

Conditions of employment
University College Roosevelt offers you a challenging position in a dynamic environment.
The Executive Board position has a 6 year term, with a possible extension of one term. In
remuneration, UCR’s executive board is subject to the WNT (Wet Normering Topinkomens), under the regime for Utrecht University. The first year will be a probationary period; following a positive assessment in the first year, the position will be extended for five more years. After six years a decision will be made to continue the position or not.
Salary will be based on VSNU salary scales in the range of scale 16 (min. € 6.405,-/max. € 8.371,-). Commuting costs within the Netherlands will be partly reimbursed. Furthermore, UCR offers secondary benefits such as:
